have a unique assemblage structure. For these assemblages, an alternative explanation might be more appropriately sought at a smaller spatial scale to match the reduced geographical extent of these idiosyncratic reefs relative to a coherent province (Rahbek 2005, Fenberg et al. 2014). Coral assemblages located in marginal areas, such as those at higher latitudes, are of particular interest because of their potential to provide a refuge during climate change (Beger et al. 2014, Makino et al. 2014, Sommer et al. 2014): coral distributions have shifted towards the poles during both past and current periods of climate change (Precht and Aronson 2004, Greenstein and Pandolfi 2008, Yamano et al. 2011, Baird et al. 2012). Therefore, understanding the relative importance of different underlying processes, such as tolerance of environmental conditions and dispersal limitation, for influencing the assemblage composition of these reefs will help determine their potential suitability as a refuge in the future (Beger et al. 2014). For instance, a reef with an assemblage determined by environmental conditions could serve as a good candidate for protection as a future refuge, whilst Ecography 38: 1225–1234, 2015 doi: 10.1111/ecog.01437 © 2015 The Authors. Reduced Diversity and High Sponge Abundance on a Sedimented Indo-Pacific Reef System: Implications for Future Changes in Environmental Quality

Although coral reef health across the globe is declining as a result of anthropogenic impacts, relatively little is known of how environmental variability influences reef organisms other than corals and fish. Sponges are an important component of coral reef fauna that perform many important functional roles and changes in their abundance and diversity as a result of environmental change has the...

Macrobenthic assemblage structure and distribution at the Boojagh Marine National Park, Southern Caspian Sea, Iran.

Although macrobenthic assemblages are considered as major players in many ecosystems around the world, the ecology of Caspian Sea macrobenthos is currently understudied. This study describes the species composition and quantitative distribution of macrobenthos in the southern Caspian Sea and relates the distribution to seasonal changes at three depths (1, 5 and 10 meters) on the Boojagh Marine ...

Population structure within the one-dimensional range of a coastal plain katydid

Biogeography plays a significant role in species' dispersal, and in turn population structure, across the landscape. The North American katydid Neoconocephalus melanorhinus belongs to a genus with high mobility. Unlike other members of the genus, N. melanorhinus is a salt marsh specialist restricted to a narrow corridor along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. In addition, their range crosses at lea...

Genetic Structuring across Marine Biogeographic Boundaries in Rocky Shore Invertebrates

Biogeography investigates spatial patterns of species distribution. Discontinuities in species distribution are identified as boundaries between biogeographic areas. Do these boundaries affect genetic connectivity? To address this question, a multifactorial hierarchical sampling design, across three of the major marine biogeographic boundaries in the central Mediterranean Sea (Ligurian-Tyrrheni...

High population connectivity across the Indo-Pacific: Congruent lack of phylogeographic structure in three reef fish congeners.

We used the mitochondrial control region and a comparative approach to study the genetic population structure of two surgeonfishes, Naso brevirostris and Naso unicornis, across their Indo-central Pacific ranges. Our purpose was to compare our results with those of a previous study of Naso vlamingii [Klanten, S.O., van Herwerden, L., Choat J.H., 2007. Extreme genetic diversity and temporal rathe...
